Smash Mouth

The beginnings of Smash Mouth may be found in the early 1990s, when Harwell and Camp got together while participating in a local band named Fush Yu Mang. The two musicians hit it off right away since they both loved pop and classic rock music. They enlisted Coleman and De Lisle in their 1994 band Smash Mouth.

Early on, the band performed at bars and clubs around the San Francisco Bay Area. They immediately gained recognition for their upbeat live performances and wide range of musical genres. Smash Mouth’s debut album, Fush Yu Mang, was released in 1997. The album yielded two major singles, “Can’t Get Enough of You Baby” and “Walkin’ on the Sun,” and was a moderate success.

Ascent to Notoriety

The release of Smash Mouth’s second album, Astro Lounge, in 1999 marked the band’s breakthrough. The album sold over 6 million copies in the US and peaked at number 6 on the Billboard 200 list, demonstrating its enormous commercial success. Several successful singles from the album were released, such as “All-Star,” “Then the Morning Comes,” and “Can’t Get Enough of You, Baby.”

The release of Smash Mouth (2001), their third album, saw the band’s success continue. The album was another commercial hit, selling over 3 million copies in the US and peaking at number 4 on the Billboard 200 list. The big singles “Pacific Coast Party” and “I’m a Believer” came from this album.

Later Times

Smash Mouth’s release coincided with a drop in the band’s popularity. All of their following albums—Magic (2012), Summer Girl (2006), The Gift of Rock (2005), and Get the Picture? (2003)—were commercial flops. Still, the group has not stopped touring and putting out new songs on a regular basis.

Harwell departed the band in 2021 following the release of divisive remarks regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. With a new lead vocalist, Smash Mouth’s surviving bandmates have carried on with their tours and live performances.
