Early Life and Background

Born on December 16, 2001, in New York City, Cenat comes from a diverse background, with a Trinidadian mother and a Haitian father. He has three siblings: twin sister Kaia, older brother Devonte, and younger brother Kaleel. Cenat attended Frederick Douglass Academy, graduating in 2019. He later pursued business administration at Morrisville State College but dropped out in 2020 to focus on his growing social media career.

Rise in Social Media

Initially aiming for a comedy career, Cenat started by posting short comedy skits on Instagram during his teenage years. He joined YouTube in 2018, creating prank and challenge videos. After catching the attention of YouTuber Fanum, Cenat became part of the YouTube group AMP. His channel garnered over 3.5 million subscribers and over 250 million views. In 2021, Cenat transitioned to Twitch, where he gained immense popularity with gaming and reaction content. Collaborations with fellow streamers and celebrity guest appearances from artists like Lil Baby and 21 Savage boosted his viewership significantly.

Cenat had a breakthrough year in 2022, winning the Streamy Award for Streamer of the Year. In early 2023, during a month-long subathon, he became Twitch’s most-subscribed streamer, surpassing Ludwig’s previous record with over 305,000 subscribers. He also won the Streamer Award for Streamer of the Year. However, in April 2023, his success was interrupted when he was banned from Twitch for undisclosed reasons. He launched “The Kai N’ Speed Show” shortly after with IShowSpeed on Rumble.

Controversies

Cenat has faced several controversies during his rise to fame. In early 2023, TikToker Jovi Pena accused him of not intervening after she was allegedly assaulted at his New Year’s Eve party. Cenat responded by saying he had been contacting the police and his lawyers at the time and was unaware of the situation. In August 2023, a giveaway he organized in Union Square led to chaos, resulting in dozens of arrests. Although Cenat was detained, he was not charged with a crime.
